"God why don't you answer my prayers?"

Thoughts, Feeling and questions series

JAMES 5:16-18

While Josh McDowell was attending seminary in California, his father went Home to be with the Lord. His mother had died years earlier, but Josh was not sure of her salvation. He became depressed, thinking that she might be lost. Was she a Christian or not? The thought obsessed him. “Lord,” he prayed, “somehow give me the answer so I can get back to normal. I’ve just got to know.” It seemed like an impossible request.

Two days later, Josh drove out to the ocean. He walked to the end of a pier to be alone. There sat an old woman in a lawnchair, fishing. “Where’s your home originally?” she asked.

“Michigan—Union City,” Josh replied. “Nobody’s heard of it. I tell people it’s a suburb of —”

“Battle Creek,” interrupted the woman. “I had a cousin from there. Did you know the McDowell family?”

Stunned, Josh responded, “Yes, I’m Josh McDowell!”

“I can’t believe it,” said the woman. “I’m a cousin to your mother.”

“Do you remember anything at all about my mother’s spiritual life?” asked Josh.

“Why sure—your mom and I were just girls—teenagers—when a tent revival came to town. It was the fourth night—we both went forward to accept Christ.”

“Praise God!” shouted Josh, startling the surrounding fishermen. Our Daily Bread, September 18

James 5:16 Confess [your] faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.

Lu 11:9-10 And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.

Joh 14:13-14 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do [it].

Joh 16:24 Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

Ro 8:32 He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

As we survey the landscape of Christianity, we should be surprised by the lack prayerful achievements. I know that many of the answers to prayer can’t be measured by visible results; however, it just seems reasonable for God’s children to be the dominant force of power on the earth in the realm of the supernatural and consequently having a measurable impact upon the physical realm and in particular in our own lives.

The emphasis in this passage is not healing, but prayer! The point he is supporting is how powerful praying really is.

He points to an example of just how powerful praying can be. It can have an immediate effect upon the natural and supernatural realm. Elijah’s prayer was one more supernatural experience to behold!

Let’s face it, praying is a job and can be difficult. If you doubt that, how many of you have prayed more than 20 minutes today? So, if praying is difficult, then how much more difficult is effective praying?

If I am going to take the time to labor in the ministry of prayer, then I certainly want it to be successful. After all, there’s little point to praying if it’s not advantageous. That’s what is meant when he says, “availeth” much. A prevailing force that is supernatural.

AVAILETH: 5791 This word is given to us by God in the present tense and indicative mood and active voice which means - if we put into practice the spiritual force of prayer it represents a simple statement of fact or reality viewed as occurring in actual time. In other words, if an action (the action of effectual fervent prayer) really occurs or has occurred or will occur, it will be rendered as promised - what is that rendering? AVAILING MUCH!

I want to provide some points that will lead us to successful praying. James defines some contingencies that enable us to effectively pray. Successful praying is contingent upon:

I.        RIGHTEOUSNESS 5:16 confess your faults

Proverbs 15:29 The LORD [is] far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.

Psalms 14:3 They are all gone aside, they are [all] together become filthy: [there is] none that doeth good, no, not one.

Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

Philippians 3:9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith:

          A.       Positional - Requires Salvation and Reconciliation

Proverbs 15:29 The LORD [is] far from the wicked: but he heareth the prayer of the righteous.

John 9:31 Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.

Ephesians 2:11-18 Wherefore remember, that ye being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called Uncircumcision by that which is called the Circumcision in the flesh made by hands; 12 That at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world: 13 But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. 14 For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us; 15 Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments contained in ordinances; for to make in himself of twain one new man, so making peace; 16 And that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having slain the enmity thereby: 17 And came and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. 18 For through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father.

1 Corinthians 1:30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption:

          B.       Practical - Requires Confession and Repentance

Isaiah 59:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid [his] face from you, that he will not hear.

Jeremiah 5:25 Your iniquities have turned away these [things], and your sins have withholden good [things] from you.

Psalms 66:18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear [me]:

1 John 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us [our] sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

II.       FERVENCY 5:16 (energized, engaged, hot impassioned prayer)

Jer 29:13 And ye shall seek me, and find [me], when ye shall search for me with all your heart.

Lu 22:44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

This may be the difference maker in God’s prescription for success. You know a physician can give you a prescription to help you but you’ve got to follow the doctor’s orders don’t you?

          A.       The Exercise of praying 5:13, 14, 16

Philippians 4:6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

Eph 6:18 Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;

1Th 5:17 Pray without ceasing.

          B.       The Ministry of praying 5:13, 14, 16

          C.       The Objectives of praying 5:17

                     1.       The Glorification of God

Joh 17:1 These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:

                     2.       The Will of God

Mt 26:42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

Mt 6:10 Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as [it is] in heaven.

1 John 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us:

                     3.       Fruitfulness

Joh 15:16 Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and [that] your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you.

III.      HUMILITY 5:14 “let him call for the elders of the church”

2Co 12:7-9 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me. And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

2 Chronicles 7:14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

James chapter four is an entire discourse of how we miss getting our prayers answered - essentially it boils down to three thoughts - Pride, selfishness and jealousy

let’s consider the operation of these three:

          A.       Lust (4:2) “of your lusts”

LUST 1937 ep-ee-thoo-meh'-o (verb): To turn upon a thing. To have a desire for, long for, to desire things forbidden.

Gal 5:17 For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would.

          B..      Discontentment "have not"

Philippians 4:11 Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, [therewith] to be content.

          C.       Extremities "ye kill"

          D.       Frustration "cannot obtain"

          E.       Conflict "fight & war"

          F.       Despair "have not"

Mt 15:27 And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masters’ table.

Ro 8:26 Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

Ne 1:4 And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned [certain] days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven,

IV.      FAITH 5:15 “the prayer of faith”

Mt 21:22 And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, believing, ye shall receive.

Mr 11:24 Therefore I say unto you, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive [them], and ye shall have [them].

Heb 11:6 But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Heb 10:22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

Heb 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
